1: How did it feel when your first book got published?

It is an incredible feeling. There is nothing quite like seeing your books on bookshelves or in readers’ hands and attending book signings and other author events. Sometimes I remind myself that it is all real and not a dream on my part.

2: What is your motivation for writing more?

Motherhood a serious commitment. For me, my children always come first and from my own experience, I know it is so easy to lose one’s self among many responsibilities of motherhood. It’s the same for working mothers as well. Writing helps me grow and teaches me new strengths. I’m a mother, a wife, a homemaker, but I get to witness a constant growth within me because of my writing. It gives me an opportunity to keep this (‘my own self’) part intact. That’s a big enough motivation for me to get going.

3: Do you pen down revelations and ideas as you get them, right then and there?

I keep a small notepad and pen by my bedside table and write down ideas that come to me at night. But the funny thing is I hardly ever open those pages and look back at it.

4: What other genres do you enjoy reading?

I’m a versatile reader and read most of the genre. Other than mystery, I enjoy literary fiction, classics, general fiction, women’s fiction, poetry, and historical fiction. Horror is the only genre I have never even tried once.

5: Can you tell us about your current projects?

Currently, I’m working on a poetry book ‘My Honour Killing and Other Poems of Love and Life’. But to tell you the truth, I have no idea if it will get published first or I will come up with another mystery or a thriller.

6: What does literary success look like to you?

My book has just come out and at the moment, selling 10,000 copies will feel like a big success. But I know if I achieve that target, I will aim for a bigger number. The sales would certainly make me very happy, but I know it’s just a number. it was the very first editorial review for ‘Tied to Deceit’ that I received from Kirkus Reviews and another one from Midwest Book Review which made me feel worthy of being an author. After receiving those lovely reviews from top professionals of the industry, I felt validated as an author.  Readers’ reviews; be it negative or positive, provide the same feeling of accomplishment.

7: What are your hobbies, passion other than writing?

I’m passionate about reading. Any free time I get, I read. I’m a hard-core reader and carry a book with me everywhere. Reading is constant for me, but my other interests keep changing; sometimes it’s baking and cooking that I get engrossed in; at other times, quilting or hand-crafts take over; shopping spree is something that swallows me whole at times and stays for months until my husband starts to notice large credit card bills and brings me back to reality.I love browsing books in our local Chapters/Indigo and thrift books stores as well.

8: In which genre you would write your book other than this Genre!

If not a literary mystery, I would probably write general fiction, women’s fiction or a thriller.

9: How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?

When I wrote Tied to Deceit, I knew the beginning, names of a few major characters, and identity of the murderer. Everything else I figured out on the way. But now I’m better prepared for writing my next book. I have learned the value of a disciplined routine.

10: Which of the character in your novel best describes you as a person?

Nandini! She’s like me in many ways; she loves reading and reads every day; she likes solitude and enjoys her own company; she is an excellent cook and a good housekeeper, but there are days when her house is shambles while she’s too engrossed in a book or busy daydreaming. The only exception is her soft-spoken personality. That’s my sister. I’m not a soft-spoken person at all.

11: A message for all the aspiring writers

Keep writing, stay at it. And read. Reading will help you to grow as a writer.
