Forgive yourself for not knowing how to protect your heart

A Light That Never Goes Dark by Mansi Jikadara B — Book Review

Some books feel like a little light at the end of the darkest tunnel, and A Light That Never Goes Dark by Mansi Jikadara B is one of them. There are so many things from this book that have stayed with me, and it has easily found a place on my list of go-to books. I love how this book has been healing me in its own little ways, through words, illustrations, and reminders that seem to arrive exactly when you need them.

A Light That Never Goes Dark is a beautiful collection of poetry and prose that explores the different seasons of life, from heartbreak, pain, and emotional struggles to healing, growth, second chances, and rediscovering happiness. It is about navigating difficult emotions, learning to be kinder to yourself, and understanding that even the darkest phases of life do not last forever.

What I particularly loved about this book is how it makes you pause, feel, and reflect. Some pages feel like a warm hug, while others make you confront emotions you may have been avoiding. The beauty of this collection lies in how it acknowledges pain without making it the only part of your story. It reminds you that healing is not always about making big changes; sometimes, it begins with accepting how you feel, taking small steps, and allowing yourself to start again.

The writing is simple, heartfelt, and deeply comforting. Mansi has a way of expressing familiar emotions through words that feel personal and relatable. The tone remains gentle, reassuring, and hopeful throughout, even when the poems and prose touch upon difficult experiences. The book creates space for readers to recognise, acknowledge, and understand their own emotions.

I especially loved the affirmations, therapy notes, and reflections on building little routines that bring comfort to everyday life. These elements add another dimension to the collection, making it more than just a book of poetry and prose. They encourage readers to pay attention to their everyday habits, the way they speak to themselves, and the small things that make difficult days easier. The emphasis on finding comfort in ordinary moments was one of my favourite aspects of the book.

Another thing that makes this collection special is its illustrations. They are beautiful and complement the emotions expressed through the writing. Together, the words and visuals create an experience that feels intimate and thoughtful. There were several moments when I found myself spending a little longer on a page, not because the words were difficult to understand, but because I wanted to sit with what they were trying to say.

What stayed with me the most was the book’s approach to self-love and healing. We often associate healing with moving on or leaving everything behind. But this collection offers a different perspective, one that embraces vulnerability, second chances, and accepting ourselves as we are. It is not always about becoming a different person, but about finding your way back to yourself.

This is not necessarily a book you have to finish in one sitting. In fact, I feel it is better enjoyed slowly, returning to certain pages whenever you need a little reassurance or perspective. Some reflections may feel familiar, but their simplicity is precisely what makes them comforting. They remind us of things we already know but tend to forget when life becomes overwhelming. On the hard days, it feels like hope. On the days when you are finding your way again, it offers that little nudge to keep going. And somewhere between its words and illustrations, you might just find yourself falling in love with yourself a little more.
