It’s the kind of comfort read that leaves you smiling long after you’ve turned the final page.

Bhujang Shetty and the Lost Treasure of Basrur by Gautham Kedoor is the story of Bhujang Shetty, a lemon juice seller from the small village of Basrur. He is a self-proclaimed detective who believes he is destined for something much bigger than running his father’s juice shop. He dreams of solving a mystery that would finally prove he’s the greatest detective in Basrur and fate grants him exactly that.

Joining him on this adventure are his childhood friend, Rathnesha Upadhyaya, and Rathnesha’s beloved, Bhagya. Bhujang is determined to save Bhagya from a marriage she doesn’t want and reunite the two lovers. However, what begins as a simple mission soon turns into an exciting treasure hunt as he uncovers the forgotten history of Bhagya’s Hegde family and the mystery surrounding the legendary lost treasure of Basrur.

The plot is entertaining and captivating, keeping readers invested throughout. With a descriptive narrative and an engaging writing style, Gautham weaves a beautiful tale of hope, treasure, adventure, heartbreak, love, friendship, and family drama. One of my favourite aspects of the novel is how seamlessly history is woven into the narrative. Instead of feeling like a history lesson, Gautham naturally incorporates Basrur’s rich past into the treasure hunt. From the days when Basrur flourished as an important port under Portuguese influence to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj’s famous raid on the prosperous town, the historical backdrop beautifully complements the mystery. The history surrounding the Hegde family and their connection to the lost treasure adds another fascinating layer, making the adventure feel authentic and deeply rooted in Basrur’s heritage. 

As he uncovers the secrets of the Hegde family’s lost treasure, he almost loses hope at several points during his journey. Yet, with every clue and every unexpected twist, the story only becomes more exciting and hilarious. Gautham brings a beautiful balance of tension and humour throughout the novel. He keeps the tone warm, light, and entertaining, making it a thoroughly enjoyable reading experience. There’s drama, witty dialogues, action, friendship, laughter, and moments of despair all blended together perfectly.

The characters are incredibly well-developed. I absolutely loved Bhujang Shetty and his detective skills. Apart from him, Rathnesha Upadhyaya, Bhagya, and Nilanjan Shetty were equally interesting and memorable. The way Bhujang approaches and solves the quest is something you’re truly going to enjoy. The climax is definitely cinematic, and I genuinely felt like I was watching a grand South Indian adventure film unfold on the pages.

Overall, it’s a brilliant read with memorable characters, an engaging narrative, and plenty of humour, adventure, and heart. Blending mystery, history, comedy, friendship, and heartfelt emotions, Bhujang Shetty and the Lost Treasure of Basrur is a complete entertainer. If you’re looking for a light-hearted yet meaningful adventure that leaves you smiling, this is one book you shouldn’t miss.
