Review

To move forward on the path of moksha, we must overcome the triangle of money and desire. Money, after all, must be earned through dharma.

Sometimes, a book reminds us how quickly we judge people by the work they do without understanding the circumstances that led them there. From Darkness to Light does exactly that. Sanchari Ghosh takes us on a compelling journey through the life of Naina, a woman working in a brothel in the heart of Mumbai. Naina offers a perspective that rises far beyond the boundaries society places on women in such spaces. Through her, we witness the daily lives, struggles, and quiet courage of those around her, each carrying their own burdens, their own stories, their own path and the deep, often unseen reasons that pushed them into this world. One of the strongest layers of the book is how it portrays friendship, family ties, love, loss, and the weight of responsibility. Many of these women are not here by choice but by circumstance, poverty, lack of money, debts, broken families, or responsibilities at home that left them with no other option. Their pasts shape their present in ways that are heartbreaking yet deeply human. I liked how their friendships act as a lifeline, messy, tender, supportive, and real.

What stayed with me most is how Naina spends her free time nurturing her spiritual side, learning about astrology, deepening her spiritual knowledge, and sharing it in her own thoughtful, grounded ways. Her journey shows how even in the darkest corners of society, the mind seeks light, meaning, and liberation. The book also aims to create awareness and spark reflections on overcoming addictions, whether it’s lust, pornography, or substance abuse. As Naina meets people from various castes, religions, and backgrounds, she realises one universal truth: everyone longs for happiness, connection, and meaning.

I loved how Naina creates meaningful connections, listens deeply, and expresses her thoughts with clarity and gentleness. Her presence becomes a mirror for others, reflecting back their own strengths, wounds, and possibilities. Whether she talks about astrology, spirituality, or wisdom from the Bhagavad Gita, she subtly spreads the essence of good karma. Her reflections on the stories of those around her help us understand their choices, their pain, and their journeys without judgment. The plot is interesting, with a crisp descriptive narrative. Sanchari’s writing is immersive, and the details are thoughtfully woven. However, the book could have benefited from stronger editing. There are noticeable typing and repetition errors that slightly break the reading flow. The pace is also slow in parts, and some elements feel repetitive. Yet the emotional depth compensates for these shortcomings.

The characters are thoughtfully written, with Naina standing out as a beautifully layered and memorable protagonist. Her friends and acquaintances add emotional weight, texture, and realism to the narrative. Their stories intertwine with hers in ways that feel authentic and deeply human. The portrayal of right choices, wrong choices, and everything in between is handled with honesty and sensitivity, making the characters’ journeys resonate long after you turn the page. The climax is powerful and satisfying, leaving a lingering impression.

Overall, From Darkness to Light is a good, thought-provoking read. An introspective, emotional, and deeply reflective one. With sharper editing, it could have been even more powerful, but the heart of the story and the strength of Naina’s character make it worth reading. It is a book that urges you to look beyond judgment and recognise the light people carry within, no matter where life has placed them.
