Review
“When you falter, I will be your mirror, not your judge.”
There are books that make us pause, books that quietly remind us to appreciate the people in our lives. Khwaaish by Khushh Khamar is one such read. The story begins in the year 2058, where the prologue introduces a world driven by technology, with Ved reflecting on emotions and drawing parallels from the Mahabharata, setting a thoughtful tone. From there, it shifts to August 1947, taking us straight into the times of Partition, creating a striking contrast between eras and emotions.
Set against the backdrop of India’s independence and the haunting times of Partition, the story moves through moments before, during, and after the chaos. It gently reminds us that destiny unfolds in its own time, no matter how much we strive, things happen when they are meant to. One thought that stayed with me deeply is that when you truly desire something, the universe aligns itself to make it happen. The book takes us through a journey of love, loss, destiny, and human connection. It beautifully captures a time when lives were uprooted, relationships were torn apart, and yet hope managed to survive in the smallest corners.

At its heart, Khwaaish weaves together multiple lives. We follow Heer and Shaurya, drawn into a mystery tied to a past they never lived. Alongside, we witness the heartbreaking story of Arjun and Ishaani, whose love was torn apart during Partition. Hunar, a poet burdened with guilt and loss, adds another emotional layer to the narrative. As their paths intertwine, the story reflects on how destiny plays its role in bringing people together, often for reasons we don’t immediately understand. It’s much like how we unknowingly become part of someone else’s story to fulfill a dream.
The plot is layered and emotionally rich. You feel the flames of Partition as you read it. The pain of separation, the ache of unfulfilled love, the warmth of friendships, and the silent resilience of people come alive through the pages. Themes of friendship, love, sacrifice, freedom, and a deep-rooted love for one’s land are beautifully explored.
The narrative flows through different timelines, offering glimpses of the past and present, gradually revealing the connections between the characters. The Partition sequences, the depiction of independence, the chaos of the last train, and the emotional aftermath are both vivid and moving. One can almost feel the chaos, fear, and heartbreak. The inclusion of Hindi poetry adds a soulful layer to the storytelling.
What truly stood out for me was the maturity of the characters. Each one carries a story filled with pain and strength. Arjun and Shaurya left a lasting impression, while Ishaani’s presence lingers beautifully. Heer’s determination and outlook on life are inspiring, and Hunar’s guilt is deeply affecting. Together, these characters feel real, flawed, and unforgettable. I especially loved Ishaani’s character. The way she carved her own path, how she ensured women became a force during the fight, quietly carrying messages and training others to do the same. These small yet powerful details add so much depth and beauty to the story. Together, they create a world that feels real and relatable.
While the story takes its time to build, the slow pace works in its favor, allowing the emotions to settle in. At times, it feels a little heavy and extended, especially with its emotional intensity, but that’s also where its beauty lies, it gives you the space to truly feel. The curiosity builds gradually, and the emotional intensity deepens with every chapter. The bond between Heer, Shaurya, Arjun, and Hunar is especially heartwarming. Their efforts to reunite lost love add a compelling dimension to the story.
The second half truly elevates the narrative, especially as Arjun’s quest to find Ishaani unfolds. There were moments, especially towards the climax, where I had to pause and just sit with the emotions the story left me with. The climax brings everything together beautifully, almost like a reflection of all the stories we’ve witnessed from the past to the present, giving us glimpses of journeys that were and continue to be a part of this narrative.
It ties back to the essence of Part 1, making the story feel complete yet lingering. The way different characters, timelines, and emotions come together introduces us to new layers while connecting existing ones. The climax is beautifully crafted, almost cinematic, giving the story a subtle Bollywood essence while delivering a powerful message.
Overall, Khwaaish is a deeply emotional, beautifully layered, and engaging read. With its strong storyline, memorable characters, and evocative writing, it’s a book that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page.
