“Choose. Choose what matters to you.”

If Timira read this review, she would probably grin and say, “Main apni favourite hoon… aur ab aapki bhi. Ab Khush raho!” And by the end of this book, you do end up agreeing with her.

You Had Me at Annyeong by Malini Banerjee is one of those light, warm, wonderfully chaotic stories that remind you how unpredictable life can be. Sometimes you just need to go with the flow, hold on to the people you love, and let the universe do its thing. I’ve never been a K-drama fan; in fact, I usually run in the opposite direction, but this book pulled me right in, into its world of colour, romance, and unpredictability. Or maybe it simply added the perfect amount of drama to my life. If I had to describe this book in one line, I would say: a book with many flavours.

The journey begins with Timira, an Indian PR consultant whose life spirals after a complicated situation with her ex-boyfriend Rodrigo, a superstar footballer. Heartbroken, confused, and with no plan ahead, she quits her job and lets her best friends take her to Bali. A lost bag, a stranger who returns it, a missing visiting card and a single moment that changes everything. A moment Timira forgets, but Haneul never does.

Set in Bombay, Bali, and Seoul, the story instantly pulls you in with its vivid, vibrant backdrop, each city adding its own shade of glam and allure. From India to Seoul, Timira’s journey unfolds in a way that feels both cinematic and deeply personal. With an exciting, layered plot and a crisp, descriptive narrative, Malini weaves a story with themes of love, friendship, romance, relationships, childhood traumas, office politics, rivalry, and lots of drama. It has twists we never saw coming, making us smile throughout.

Malini Banerjee writes with an engaging, visual flow that makes you feel every bit of Timira’s chaos. Her heartbreak, her softness, her hesitation, her deeply millennial thoughts, and her tendency to think one thing and say another. She is emotional, dramatic, childlike at heart, and someone who wears her heart on her sleeve. You can’t help but root for her. Her writing style is captivating, dramatic, and immersive, the kind that makes every chapter feel like a scene playing out in front of you. With each chapter, the events become messier, funnier, softer, and more emotionally tangled, making the reading experience addictive.

Haneul enters the story with calm steadiness, weighed down by duty, expectations, and an engagement to Mina that feels more like an obligation than a choice. His chemistry with Timira is built on that half-forgotten moment in Bali, forgotten only by her, but remembered in sharp detail by him. Rodrigo’s re-entry adds the perfect dramatic twist, while Mina, driven by pride and insecurity, brings in the right amount of layered rivalry.

One of the strengths of the novel is how Malini uses Hindi thoughts and Hinglish dialogues. They make the writing warm, intimate, and incredibly relatable. They make Timira’s voice feel personal, like listening to your best friend narrate her life. The Korean phrases sprinkled throughout the narrative add cultural depth and charm, making the setting feel authentic. Hindi phrases, Indian emotions, Korean language, global settings,  all add texture to the story. She pays attention to small details: the banter, the emotional contrasts, the pauses in conversations, the little moments of remembrance. These touches elevate the book from a simple romcom to a heartfelt, immersive reading experience.

Haneul’s journey is both terrifying and deeply moving. You can feel his pain, his longing, and the way he’s quietly protected, making his arc truly memorable. The characters are well-developed, each of them adding spice to the story. The friendships stand out as beautifully as the romance; they form the emotional backbone. Alice and Bhaskar feel like home, while Hanee, Timira’s sweet, loyal PA in Seoul, adds innocence and brightness to the story. The subtle, emotional portrayal of Timira’s equation with her parents, especially her mother, adds another meaningful layer. While I enjoyed Timira and Haneul, and appreciated characters like Alice and Bhaskar, the one who stood out the most for me was Mina, especially toward the end. The way she sets things right for everyone leaves a lasting impact. Hanee, too, remained a consistent favourite. The family drama, playful banter, and fun conversations add a warm, comforting layer to the narrative. The backstories of all the supporting characters make the narrative richer. From a journalist seeking justice for his brother, to Rodrigo’s moments of clarity, to Chairman Ri’s emotional revelations, and even Mr. Choi’s surprising contributions. Each character adds flavour, turning the story into a full, lively world.

Malini’s greatest strength lies in blending chaotic drama with emotional honesty, making you laugh, ache, hope, and root for her characters effortlessly. She captures the small, emotional moments beautifully. The tone of the book remains curious, exciting, and fun throughout, making it easy to connect with. It does feel a bit slow-paced and slightly dragged in some places, but honestly, the drama demands it, and it fits the mood of the story perfectly.

There’s a playful charm in the way Timira thinks and reacts, balanced with deeper reflections on family, love, heartbreak, ambition, and personal choices. The book blends Bollywood-style flamboyance with K-drama softness, creating a tone that is fun, dramatic, and comforting at the same time. As the story progresses, the emotional breaking points for both Timira and Haneul are handled with sensitivity. Their vulnerabilities surface, forcing them to confront what they feel, what they fear, and what they truly want. The tension, the longing, the messy emotions, everything builds up wonderfully. The story picks up pace as everything begins to collide.

The climax is pure Bollywood- dramatic, heartfelt, and incredibly satisfying. It’s not a typical K-drama ending, and that’s what makes it stand out even more. The little moments Malini highlights the conversations, the quiet impressions, the emotional beats stay with you long after the last page. The ending is poetic and hopeful: The dark of the night finally meets the sky. A closing that feels tender, earned, and fulfilling.

You Had Me at Annyeong is a warm, entertaining, emotional romcom with a generous sprinkle of drama. It’s messy in the best way, romantic in a real way, and comforting in a way only stories about second chances and destiny can be. The perfect pick if you’re in the mood for drama, culture, chemistry, friendship, and a story that keeps you reading long into the night. A heartwarming escape, with just the right amount of masala.
