Review:

“It’s hard to be in love because it’s not about the green flags we have, but the red flags we choose to live with.”

Some stories feel like reminders or signs that we are ignoring, and this book felt like one such book. It showed me the signs of the red flags we all have in us, and how we sometimes choose to live with those red flags. Days with My Red-Flag Girlfriend by Kajol Aikat is an emotional roller coaster ride of love, chaos, insecurities, and second chances.

It’s a story of Vikrant and Tara, who just fell in love. Their story begins as a dare when Vikrant is challenged to slide into Tara’s DMs and he does. That’s when love happens. Vikrant, a middle-class guy, and Tara, an Instagram influencer, fall in love. From cozy campus walks to viral couple reels, late-night chai dates, and a Goa trip, they fall for each other. What begins as a light and romantic story becomes more emotionally intense, messy, and complicated as their insecurities and choices start catching up with them. And their relationship doesn’t remain just theirs. In a world where everything is shared online, their love story becomes public too. Their moments turn into reels, their relationship is watched and commented on, and social media becomes another part of their relationship, bringing its own expectations and pressures.

It is easy to love someone, but difficult to stay in love forever. That’s when the drama begins. There are insecurities that don’t disappear. There are “I trust you” statements that come with many questions, jealousy that slowly finds its way into the relationship, and choices that have consequences. And this is where I think the title becomes particularly interesting. The story isn’t about having one “red flag” character and one perfect partner. Both Vikrant and Tara are red flags in their own ways. They bring their insecurities, expectations, jealousy, misunderstandings, and flaws into the relationship. Neither of them is completely right or completely wrong, and that makes their relationship feel more real. We see how easy it is to recognise someone else’s red flags, but how difficult it can be to recognise our own. Sometimes, we know something is wrong and still choose to stay. Sometimes, love makes us overlook things we wouldn’t otherwise accept. The story explores that space between knowing and choosing.

As their relationship becomes more serious after the ups and downs, Vikrant and Tara even decide to get engaged, bringing their families into the picture and making their future together feel real. But as the stakes become higher, so do the cracks in their relationship. What once looked like a perfect love story starts becoming a test of trust, understanding, and how much they are willing to fight for each other. Their love story begins more like a Bollywood drama, but later they get a reality check. The story makes us question whether loving someone means accepting their flaws, or whether there comes a point when the red flags can no longer be ignored. It makes us question where love ends and compromise begins, and whether fighting for a relationship is the same as constantly fighting within it.

The plot of the story is an interesting one, as we see how both Vikrant and Tara fight for love and with each other, and how the red flags enter their relationship. There are moments that make you root for them, moments that make you question their choices, and moments where you simply want them to communicate better. That emotional push and pull keeps the story moving.

With a crisp, descriptive, and captivating writing style, we see the lives of both Vikrant and Tara, how they express their love in different ways, and what expectations they have. With Tara, we see the side of influencer agencies and content creation, while with Vikrant, we see the corporate side, and how they both try to balance things. Among this, we also see their campus love, blooming beautifully. What makes this even more interesting is how their individual careers and the public nature of Tara’s online life begin to influence their relationship. Their love isn’t happening in isolation; it is happening in front of an audience, making trust and boundaries even more complicated.

There’s lots of drama in the story, and with each event, the story gets exciting as we see things finally falling into place, but then there are twists that act as really interesting turns. I liked how the story doesn’t stay in one emotional space. It can be light and romantic in one moment and then shift into something tense or emotionally heavy, reflecting the changing nature of Vikrant and Tara’s relationship. The tone of the story matches the beginning of their relationship beautifully. It feels young, playful, breezy, and very much like a modern-day Bollywood romance, with its college setting, DMs, reels, chai dates, trips, and all those little moments that make falling in love exciting. But as the relationship progresses, the tone gradually changes. It’s a bit slow-paced at certain places, especially in the portions where the relationship takes time to move forward, but once the story picks up, it keeps you invested and the twists add to the reading experience.

The characters are brilliantly developed. I liked seeing the growth in both Vikrant and Tara, the way they handle the challenges in their relationship, and how their understanding of love changes along the way. Their growth is not perfect or linear, and perhaps that is what makes them interesting. They make mistakes, hurt each other, question themselves, and still try to understand what their relationship means to them.

The climax, of course, was unexpected, and the way things turned out was different. It is one of those endings that makes you look back at the entire journey and reconsider some of the things you have read along the way.

In all, Days with My Red-Flag Girlfriend is an engaging read with strong characters, an intense plot, and an emotional roller coaster ride that takes you through love, insecurities, jealousy, drama, and second chances. What begins as a fun, breezy romance gradually turns into a more complicated journey of love and relationships. If you enjoy contemporary romance with relationship drama, social media, complicated emotions, second chances, twists, and characters who aren’t perfect, this book is worth picking up.
