Review:

It had been a while since I read a good courtroom drama, and The Designer by Prerna Gulrajani brought back everything I enjoy about it. The sharp arguments, layered characters, and unexpected twists. With just the right blend of emotions, suspense, and business intrigue, this story had me turning pages eagerly.

The story revolves around Darshana (Dee), the creative soul behind Dee Fashions and daughter of Vikram Patel, a respected name in the textile industry. With her focus on design and creativity, Dee left business operations in the hands of her college friend Vipul. Everything was running smoothly until a sudden legal notice disrupted it all. With Vipul out of reach, Dee and her team are left to navigate the mess on their own.

That’s when the real journey begins, filled with realisations, betrayal, and rediscovery of trust and friendship.

Pushkar, the finance head, begins to notice the gaps and anomalies in the company’s financial records. With quiet determination, he digs deeper, realising something is seriously off. He joins hands with Chhavi, the sharp and composed legal head, to uncover the truth. Together, they set off on a mission to protect Dee, her business, and her family. Chhavi ropes in the seasoned and insightful Mr. Naidu, a veteran legal mind whose unconventional strategies and wisdom breathe new hope into their fight.

Set against the rich backdrop of a Gujarati family, The Designer explores themes of friendship, family support, business drama, and courtroom suspense. Prerna weaves an engaging narrative with a crisp, descriptive writing style that keeps you hooked. The drama unfolds steadily, and with each chapter, another piece of the puzzle falls into place, revealing how deep the chaos really runs and how Dee’s blind trust in others may have cost her dearly.

Pushkar’s journey from the slums of Dharavi to becoming a talented, self-made professional is both inspiring and heartwarming. Pushkar and Chhavi’s subtle love story adds charm and balance to the narrative and the intensity of the courtroom drama.  And then there are the Patels—Dee’s parents, Vikram and Sarika, who are the emotional heart of the book. Their quiet strength, understanding, and unwavering support make them truly memorable. They provide a solid emotional core to the narrative. Their presence truly elevates the story.

Prerna’s writing is simple, fluid, and emotionally engaging. She captures the drama and tension effectively, while also portraying moments of resilience and hope. The characters are well-developed, and each one plays a significant role in shaping the story, adding a distinct flavour to the plot. Mr. Naidu, in particular, stands out with his sharp intellect and heartwarming mentorship.

The climax? Unexpected, yet satisfying. It brings all threads together with a twist that challenges assumptions and leaves you reflecting long after the last page. It perfectly balances the tension and emotional stakes built throughout the story, delivering a payoff that feels both earned and impactful.

In all, The Designer is a compelling, heartfelt, and drama-filled read that effortlessly combines family values, legal thrill, and emotional depth. If you’re in the mood for a story packed with drama, family love, legal twists, and a message about reclaiming your voice, this one won’t disappoint.
