Review
“Sometimes people let differences divide them, instead of seeing what makes them the same.”
This one line made me pause—it reminded me how often we create distance and differences, rather than togetherness, forgetting that life is meant to be celebrated with the people we love, because we never know what tomorrow may bring. Some people leave marks so deep on our minds and hearts that even in their absence, they stay with us in our conversations, in our memories, in the little ways we keep them alive. The Song of Our Bond by Pinki Bakshi captures one such story of Meena and Kasturi, two girls who became inseparable friends, only to be parted by circumstances. How their paths intertwined only to drift apart when life had other plans.
Set in the days before phones and the internet, their friendship faced the ultimate test: distance. We witness how their friendship sails through letters, memories, and emotions rather than instant connections. Meena, who moved to Orissa after her father’s transfer, found her first and best friend in Kasturi. But soon, Kasturi moved to the US, and their lives changed forever. What follows is their attempt to hold onto each other through thoughts, memories, and the invisible thread of friendship. From attempts to stay in touch to simply holding each other in thoughts, Pinki’s words take us down memory lane, making us nostalgic about the old friendships we once cherished and the simple old times. Alongside the story of friendship, we also witness the unsettling riots between the Oriya and Bengali communities, moments that leave a lasting imprint on Meena’s young mind.

With themes of friendship, family love, cultural tension, separation, and the power of memories, Pinki weaves a tale that is both heartwarming and thought-provoking. The storyline is simple yet impactful, filled with crisp narration that balances tenderness with the weight of loss. She captures both the emptiness of separation and the beauty of keeping someone alive in spirit. At times, the narrative felt a little too direct. There are moments where you wish for more drama, deeper detailing, or layered emotions that would add richness to the story. Yet, this very simplicity is also what makes the book heartwarming. It flows gently, like a personal memory being shared. Still, the last few chapters stood out beautifully for me. Watching Meena grow up, making choices about her own life while carrying her bond with Kasturi in her heart, was truly moving.
Pinki Bakshi’s writing is simple, smooth, and emotionally evocative. She chooses clarity over complexity, making the narrative accessible and easy to follow. Her descriptions are crisp, and she captures emotions in a way that feels genuine and relatable. The warmth of friendship, the tension of riots, and the quiet ache of separation all come across without unnecessary heaviness. The characters are well-developed, especially Meena, who constantly tries to keep Kasturi alive with resilience and love within her world. Kasturi, too, leaves a mark, though I longed to see more of her perspective. A deeper dive into her side of the story would have enriched the narrative even more.
The climax is satisfying, tying the story together beautifully, leaving readers with a sense of closure, and ending on a warm note. Overall, The Song of Our Bond is a light yet meaningful read on friendship and the way memories keep people alive long after distance or fate has separated them. It’s the kind of book you can count on when you want something nostalgic, simple, and heartfelt, reminding us how bonds, once formed, never truly fade, they live on in us, shaping who we are.
