Review:

A wonderful book that talks about life in a joint family. Well, it is also about joInt family. I liked the way the author smartly titled the book and the way it is included. It starts with a show for cancer patients after which a group of friends goes out for a party and they meet a stranger. Who is the stranger? Is it safe to speak to him? What is he carrying in a bag? He has a story to tell, stories about his joint family and homegrown staple crop.

I loved the plot of the story filled with twists. Each family has a story to tell, a drama to witness. It’s the story of Kumud and Bhupesh who lives with their parents and sisters in a joint family. It’s a trippy story of the 80s where the joint family is doing farming. Farming of the crop is harmful but also acts as a medicine.

I liked the way the author narrated this beautiful story in an engaging way that one could connect to. We could feel Kumuds pain, Bhupesh’s hurt, grandpa’s tantrums and everything.

The way the author described each of the characters life, how greed and jealousy made them a bad person while Kumud and Bhupesh who selflessly served the family gained goodness, happiness in the end. What I loved the most was the bond the author described between a family. Kumud’s family! I liked how each character had its own shade that faded with time. The way the author described Grandma’s death, the queen of the field who died in between her homegrowns.

The author also shows the old mentality of the family to underestimate daughters-in-law. The way they treated Kumud but then I loved the way her husband supported her. It’s a wonderful story with a crisp and interesting writing style that you are going to like.

A smooth paced story with many emotions and stories filled with drama and struggle. A story with an unusual end that surprised me.

Overall, it’s a simple, wonderful and amazing read that you’ll love.
