Review:

“Few wounds just leave scars, but not the pain or agony”.

From the book The Unlove Letter by Abhik Roy.

Right from the cover, I was interested in reading this book. The title seemed intriguing and I was excited to discover what the story would be. It hinted at a deeper exploration of emotional wounds and healing. As my 91st book of 2023, I found it to be a thought-provoking read.

A girl is found in a ravaged state on the road and was taken to hospital by Agam. Little did he know, helping Vishakha would get him in trouble. The police commence their investigation and Agam is their prime suspect.  As the story unfolds, we are left with questions: Will Vishakha recover? How did she end up in this condition? Who will come to the aid of this stranger left to die? Is justice attainable in an unfair world? Will the investigation be conducted fairly or manipulated? And most importantly, who is the real culprit?

Abhik Roy’s “The Unlove Letter” takes readers on a thought-provoking journey filled with themes of love, friendship, resilience, and philosophy. From the outset, the book’s title intrigued me, and I was eager to discover the story it held within its pages. Abhik’s writing style is engaging, and the descriptive narrative draws readers into the plot. He skillfully adds twists, ensuring that the storyline remains intriguing throughout.

As the police investigation unfolds, Agam finds himself becoming the prime suspect, despite his initial act of kindness. The suspense builds as we wonder whether Vishakha will recover and how she ended up in such a dire condition. He raises questions about fairness, both in the world and in the investigation itself, adding an extra layer of complexity to the narrative.

One of the strengths of “The Unlove Letter” lies in its well-developed characters. As time passes, Agam’s confidence grows, but this also raises suspicions among the police. Meanwhile, he develops a strong bond with Vishakha’s parents through frequent visits to the hospital. Along the way, he meets Aafsha, who becomes a close friend and finds himself drawn to her while unknowingly forging a mysterious connection with Vishakha. Where will life lead Agam?

The story is narrated in a descriptive and engaging manner. While the investigation progresses, the lives of each character undergo significant changes. We witness the unwavering support of Agam’s family, the heart-wrenching emotions of Vishakha’s parents, and Agam and Riyaz’s attempt to restore normalcy to their lives.

While the story gains momentum after a few initial chapters, there are instances where the pacing feels a bit slow, especially during extended conversations. However, the gripping nature of the investigation and the gradual unravelling of the culprits keep readers engaged. Each event and development in the story contributes to the overall tension, allowing readers to empathize with the characters’ situations.

“The Unlove Letter” is an immersive story with a compelling narrative. However, there are instances where conversations feel prolonged, occasionally slowing down the pacing. Nevertheless, the book manages to hold the reader’s interest through the captivating investigation and the identification of the culprits. Each event further intensifies the story, whether it’s Vishakha’s recovery or Agam’s state of mind, allowing readers to empathize with their situations.

This book delves into philosophical themes and presents a love story. One aspect that disappointed me was the lack of action in the pursuit of justice. The story feels somewhat predictable and leaves several questions unanswered, particularly those related to the case.

One aspect I particularly enjoyed about the book was the well-developed and strong characters. Each character plays a significant role in shaping the narrative. Among them, Agam stood out to me the most. His ability to navigate challenging situations, especially during the investigations, was exciting to read. I appreciated the support of Agam’s parents and the genuine conversations between mother and son.

The climax of the book left me somewhat dissatisfied and caught me offguard. It had the potential to be a more intense read with additional twists and engaging debates surrounding the case rather than purely philosophical discussions.

The title too is not much related to the story which again disappointed me. It would have been an interesting read if it was more structured and if the conversations were not stretched.

In all, “The Unlove Letter” is an engrossing read with a strong storyline. It is recommended for readers who enjoy thought-provoking narratives that explore the complexities of love, friendship, and philosophy. Despite its minor flaws, Abhik’s book offers an engaging experience that will resonate with those new to the genre.
