▶️ Where did your last read take you?

While one of my books took me to Florida while the other took me to Gujarat. These days we find very few books with the setting of Gujarat and being my hometown I decided to pick this one. My book 126 of 2023.

‘Failure is nothing but a better version of success coming ahead.’

from Wish You Were Single by Zeel Chapaneri.

Wish You Were Single by Zeel Chapaneri is a captivating novel that takes readers on a heartwarming journey of love, friendship, and self-discovery. Set against the backdrop of the culturally rich landscapes of Gujarat, the novel follows the life of Aarohi, a young woman with aspirations and dreams that lead her on a path of personal growth and unexpected connections.

The story unfolds with Aarohi’s quest for employment, a relatable and relevant theme in today’s world. As she navigates the challenges of job hunting, readers are drawn into her world of aspirations and setbacks. Zeel artfully paints Aarohi’s journey, highlighting the determination and resilience that many individuals face when venturing into the professional realm. As she leaves her hometown behind to venture into a new city and stays with her best friend, she tries to adjust in her new office.

The heart of the novel lies in the relationships that Aarohi cultivates. Her bond with her best friend Charvi provides a strong foundation, offering moments of lightheartedness and emotional support. However, it is her connection with Samarth, her mentor, that adds depth and complexity to the narrative. Who wishes to be single? Samarth or Aarohi? And why? These questions will excite readers as they can read their feelings but will they ever confess? Zeel skillfully explores the intricacies of their relationship, moving beyond the boundaries of conventional friendship and delving into the uncharted territories of personal connections.

Zeel’s writing style is approachable and relatable, making it easy for readers to become engrossed in Aarohi’s world. The alternating perspectives of Aarohi and Samarth provide a well-rounded view of the unfolding events, enriching the emotional experience of the story. Through their eyes, we witness the growth, dilemmas, and aspirations that shape their lives adding depth to their characters.

Wish You Were Single offers more than just a romantic storyline. It delves into the complexities of modern relationships, the pursuit of personal goals, and the importance of friendship and family. Zeel raises thought-provoking questions about societal expectations, personal desires, and the different paths that individuals choose to follow. Aarohi’s journey is not only about her career and relationships but also about discovering her roots and understanding her place within her family and community.

One of the book’s strengths is its portrayal of family dynamics. Aarohi’s navigation of familial expectations, her career, and her personal desires adds layers to her character. The cultural elements and family support depicted within the story offer a window into the broader context of her life. Aarohi’s determination to balance her career aspirations, family commitments, and her desire for a meaningful partnership paints a picture of modern-day dilemmas that many readers can relate to.

While the narrative effectively explores themes of love, friendship, and personal growth, there are moments when the pacing becomes slow due to excessive detail. A slightly brisker pace might have enhanced the overall reading experience. The author artfully weaves in humor and a touch of romance, making the book emotionally engaging. The matchmaking process and Aarohi’s interactions with potential suitors and her interaction with her best friends add a lighthearted yet realistic aspect to the narrative.

While the novel’s pacing keeps readers engaged, there are moments where the detailed descriptions and introspective musings slow down the narrative’s momentum. A slightly brisker pace could have heightened the overall reading experience, maintaining a balance between introspection and plot progression. However, one might yearn for more dramatic twists and turns to heighten the story’s tension. Additionally, the ending, while hinting at the possibility of a sequel, might leave some readers desiring a more conclusive wrap-up.

It’s an emotional journey that prompts readers to reflect on their own beliefs about friendship, love, family, and personal growth.  Through Aarohi’s journey, readers are reminded of the significance of embracing change, seeking personal fulfillment, and cherishing the bonds that shape our lives. With its relatable characters, cultural richness, and themes of self-discovery, Wish You Were Single offers a delightful and heartfelt reading experience.
