Review:

I completed the first book of the year, diving into a captivating exploration of Hasya Rasa, which is the essence of humour, and its significance in the relationship between Krishna and the Gopis. In this remarkable journey, Krishna masterfully used humour and satire to impart crucial life lessons, all while fostering an atmosphere of love and acceptance among the Gopis.

In her insightful book, Rasa, Shalini Modi brings to life timeless tales from the Puranas, unraveling the intricate themes and nuances that define human relationships and the essence of life itself. The term ‘Rasa’ translates to ‘essence,’ and throughout the narrative, we discover how various rasas manifest at different stages of our existence. Shalini skillfully illustrates how each rasa has historically dominated the lives of deities, emphasizing the deep connections and responsibilities inherent in their divine roles.

Shalini introduces us to nine distinct rasas, each intricately linked to a particular deity, showcasing their primary duties and the lessons they embody. Shalini masterfully weaves each tale, crafting narratives that are not only informative but also engage and entice the readers with their depth and richness. She shares many lesser-known stories, enhancing its allure and encouraging a deeper appreciation for the cultural heritage it represents.

Within these pages, we encounter the passionate tales of celebrated pairs such as Shiva and Parvati, whose profound love and the strength of their partnership is always tested; Krishna and Rukmini, showcasing devotion and commitment; and Ravana and Mandodari, illustrating the complexities of love and duty. Dushyant and Shakuntala’s poignant story further exemplifies how rasa influences relationships, revealing how love can transcend time and circumstance. Of which Lakshman and Urmila’s story is my favourite.

As you immerse yourself in these stories, you will undoubtedly feel the divine connection that the author so expertly conveys. This book is not just a collection of tales; it’s a beautifully crafted exploration of the human experience, making it a light yet profound read that is sure to resonate with anyone who seeks to understand the complexities of love, life, and relationships.
