Review:

In life, you’ll receive both compliments and criticism. Accept them both, but don’t let either get to your head too much.

This line from the book stayed with me a little longer. It’s from a letter a father has written to his son as he wants him to remember a couple of things, and this is one of them. Life can often feel like a rollercoaster, filled with exhilarating highs and crashing lows, creating a tapestry of experiences that are almost perfect but yet often fall short of our expectations. This essence is beautifully captured in Almost Perfect, but Mostly Not by Vasudha Sahgal.

Almost Perfect, but Mostly Not by Vasudha Sahgal is a collection of 14 thought-provoking short stories that delve into rich themes, each exploring the complexities of love, loss, dreams, friendship, longing, and relationships. Here, we could see our protagonist finding their purpose in the chaos in ‘Delhi Drama, Turkish Trauma’, while ‘Forbidden’ shares about smiling over the love never received. The ‘Elite Club’ talks about the sea-saw of love and how forgetting the love will ponder your heart ‘When Life Gives You Lemons Write a Novel’ talks about how, at times, life will bring us to a crossroads where one decision would make or break things in life. ‘The Khanna Conundrum’ story talks about choosing ourselves and our dreams, while the other talks about how we judge someone too easily and how a family together can stand all the storms.

‘Ten Senses and Sixth Sense’ talks about Women being there for other women and how kindness plays a key role in the journey, ‘Six Feet of Separation’ is about love and longing, ‘Tony de Souza’s date with Death’ is a heartwarming story focusing on Mental health and relationships. ‘Natasha’s Nod to Her Normal’ is about a girl chasing her dreams and a loving family rooting for her, while ‘Rinse, Reveal, Repeat’ is an interesting story of life and its shades.

What I loved most is we feel a sense of comfort with each story, The climax of each of them is loose end and perfect.  Readers can easily find pieces of themselves within these narratives, often longing to see more of each character’s journey unfold.
