Review
“I’d meet a girl one day and she’d read me like a book, including the chapters that came before her.”
This line sets the perfect tone for the story -tender, hopeful, and quietly intense. I was in the mood for something light, cheesy, and unapologetically romantic and that’s when Tessa Bailey came to the rescue. Pitcher Perfect brings us the story of Roobie and Skylar, who meet under complicated and emotionally messy circumstances during a rough phase in their lives.

Skylar has feelings for her brother’s best friend. In an attempt to make him jealous, she teams up with Roobie and comes up with a plan – fake dating. What starts as a strategic move soon turns into something far more complicated. Will their plan succeed? Or will Roobie lose control of the feelings he’s desperately trying to hide? And what happens when Skylar, who is focused on someone else, slowly begins to feel something real?
The enemies-to-lovers trope is executed in the most entertaining way – filled with tension, banter, and simmering chemistry. The plot is engaging and packed with drama, romance, and emotional depth. Tessa Bailey once again weaves a compelling romantic narrative with her signature descriptive style and emotionally charged storytelling. With every chapter, the story grows more exciting, intense, and yes, deliciously spicy.
One of the most beautiful aspects of this novel is Roobie’s character. He knows that Skylar loves someone else. He knows the “bubble” can burst at any moment. And yet, he stands by her, supports her, and tries to make things better for her – even if it might break him. That silent devotion adds such emotional weight to the story. Between them are conversations they’ve never had with anyone else. Vulnerable, raw, and honest. These moments build the deep, intense love that anchors the book. With each chapter, we uncover new layers of their personalities, their insecurities, and their emotional struggles.
Skylar’s internal dilemma is beautifully portrayed. She’s torn between what she thinks she wants and what her heart is slowly discovering. Meanwhile, Roobie’s friends play a grounding role – reminding him that fake relationships have expiration dates and encouraging him to finally express what he truly feels. The side characters are well-developed too, each carrying their own backstories that add richness to the narrative. The drama feels natural, the pacing is smooth, and the emotional build-up leads to a satisfying and heartfelt climax.
What I especially loved was how the story balances softness with intensity. There are playful, teasing moments that make you smile, but right when you get comfortable, the emotional stakes rise. The vulnerability between Roobie and Skylar doesn’t feel rushed unfolds slowly, making their connection believable and deeply satisfying. Another highlight is the way their journey transforms into something far more layered. It’s not just about pretending; it becomes about confronting fears, insecurities, and the courage to choose someone who may not choose you back. The tension between what they should feel and what they actually feel keeps the reader invested till the very end.
There’s also a beautiful exploration of self-worth here. Skylar’s journey isn’t just about choosing between two boys, it’s about understanding what kind of love she deserves. And Roobie’s arc shows us that loving someone sometimes means risking heartbreak, but also trusting that honesty is better than silence. What elevates this story further is the emotional maturity beneath the spice. Beyond the chemistry and dramatic twists, the novel quietly explores themes of timing, vulnerability, and emotional courage, reminding us that the right love often asks us to unlearn our fears.
Even when the trope feels familiar, Tessa’s writing keeps it fresh through sharp dialogue, charged moments, and emotional payoffs that genuinely satisfy. The climax doesn’t just resolve the romance, it reinforces the growth both characters experience along the way. At its core, this story explores how love can make us reckless, how trust becomes the foundation of something real, and how sometimes the person standing right beside us is the one who truly sees us – chapters before and after.
Overall, Pitcher Perfect is a spicy, light, emotional, and entertaining read that delivers exactly what a good romance should – butterflies, tension, and a beautiful closure. A heartfelt, swoony romance that balances heat with emotional depth and leaves you smiling long after the final page.
Tessa Bailey truly never disappoints.
