If I ever met Hayes, I’d probably tell him that beneath all the walls he has built, he is the kind of person anyone would be lucky to love. He may not believe in love easily, but once he lets someone into his heart, he loves wholeheartedly.

This year, I’ve been exploring different romance tropes, and this time I picked up a fake dating romance. The Last Eligible Billionaire beautifully combines fake dating, grumpy-sunshine, opposites attract, and billionaire romance into a delightful romantic comedy that kept me invested from beginning to end.

The Last Eligible Billionaire by Pippa Grant is a heartwarming, emotional, and delightfully entertaining romance that reminds us of one simple truth: money can buy luxury, but it cannot buy genuine love. The story follows Hayes, the country’s last eligible billionaire, and Begonia, a recently divorced art teacher trying to rediscover herself. Hoping for a fresh start, Begonia heads out on a vacation away from the chaos of city life. An unexpected incident brings her face-to-face with Hayes, and circumstances leave her with one unusual choice, to become his fake girlfriend.

The novel opens with one of the funniest meet-cutes I’ve read in a while. Their unexpected first encounter immediately sets the tone for the humour, chaos, and romance that follows.  Hayes has one goal: convince his family to stop setting him up with potential partners. Hayes isn’t just another billionaire. He belongs to the influential Rutherford family, owners of a famous movie empire, which explains why everyone is obsessed with his love life and why the media constantly follows him. Apart from that, he is quite different from his younger brother, Jonas, a popular Hollywood star. While Jonas embraces the spotlight, Hayes prefers staying away from it, making the contrast between the two brothers even more interesting.  For Begonia, pretending to date a billionaire was never part of the plan. But with her adventurous spirit and little reason to refuse, she agrees, unknowingly stepping into a world where immense wealth hides loneliness, expectations, and emotional baggage.

As their carefully crafted act begins, so does a beautiful journey of growth.

Beneath the layers of luxury, Hayes isn’t simply a billionaire, he is a vulnerable, emotionally guarded man carrying the weight of family expectations, past heartbreaks, and years of public scrutiny. More than once, I found myself wishing he had been born into an ordinary family instead of one constantly surrounded by attention, power, and media scrutiny. Watching Begonia slowly become the person with whom he could finally let his guard down was one of the novel’s most rewarding aspects.

One of the strengths of the novel is its dual narrative. Through alternating perspectives, Pippa Grant allows us to understand both Hayes and Begonia intimately. Watching them pretend to be in love while slowly falling for each other feels natural, heartfelt, and incredibly satisfying. I especially loved how beautifully Pippa Grant combines the fake dating and opposites-attract tropes. Begonia is lively, optimistic, funny, and full of warmth, while Hayes is reserved, grumpy, and emotionally distant. Their contrasting personalities complement each other perfectly, making every interaction entertaining as well as heartwarming. What makes their relationship even more beautiful is their chemistry. I loved how they slowly began sharing their deepest secrets, noticing the little things about each other, understanding unspoken emotions, and quietly becoming each other’s safe place.

The storyline balances romance, humour, family drama, healing, and emotional depth beautifully. The descriptive writing remains crisp, making every chapter engaging without becoming overwhelming. Through the shifting perspectives, we experience two vastly different worlds – that of an ultra-rich billionaire and an ordinary art teacher and yet their emotional struggles feel surprisingly similar.

Pippa Grant’s writing is exactly what I have come to expect from her: captivating, witty, emotionally layered, and effortlessly readable. She knows exactly when to linger on emotion and when to let humour carry the scene, which keeps even the slower opening chapters engaging. Beyond the romance, the novel is packed with absurdly funny situations, witty banter, and laugh-out-loud moments that make it impossible not to smile. The balance between humour and emotional depth is what makes this story so entertaining as well as heartfelt.

The novel starts at a slightly slower pace, with several events unfolding simultaneously, but once the story settles, it becomes increasingly addictive. Every new chapter raises the emotional stakes, making it difficult to stop reading. The characters are wonderfully written. While I adored Begonia’s resilience and humour, Hayes completely stole my heart. What makes Begonia such a memorable character is the warmth she carries wherever she goes. Despite carrying the scars of a painful divorce, she continues to spread kindness, optimism, and joy. Her ability to see the good in people and help those around her makes her impossible not to love. And then there’s Marshmallow, Begonia’s lovable pet dog, who undoubtedly becomes one of the story’s brightest stars. Bringing chaos, humour, and unexpected heart to almost every chapter, Marshmallow becomes much more than a pet, he is one of the novel’s biggest scene stealers and one of its most unforgettable characters.

As the story progresses, scandals erupt, relationships are tested, and hidden emotions finally surface. We witness Hayes confronting the complicated relationship he shares with his family, people he often resents but who, in their own imperfect ways, continue to protect and care for him. We also dive deeper into Begonia’s past, her failed marriage, her fears, childhood memories, and her journey toward healing. These emotional layers give the romance much greater depth than a typical fake dating novel. What stayed with me wasn’t the fake dating trope, it was watching two people carrying very different emotional wounds slowly choose vulnerability over fear. The romance works because Pippa Grant never rushes their emotional journey. Every conversation, every misunderstanding, every shared secret, and every moment of laughter quietly builds towards something deeper, making their love story feel genuine and well-earned.

The climax feels wonderfully cinematic, delivering satisfying emotional payoffs while tying together the characters’ journeys beautifully. In all, The Last Eligible Billionaire is a story about two people carrying different emotional wounds, slowly learning to trust, heal, and choose love over fear. Filled with humour, memorable characters, and heartfelt moments, it’s a romance that stays with you long after the last page. Long after the fake dating ends and the billionaire glamour fades into the background, what stays is the quiet reminder that love isn’t about finding someone perfect, it’s about finding someone who makes you feel safe enough to be imperfect. That’s what made this story stay with me a little longer.
