Saurav Dutt has been my go-to author. I love his books, especially his writing style. The way he brings out the best from each character and the way he weaves a brilliant story always makes me go to his books.

Having read his previous works, this book is like a cherry on the cake. Right from the impressive cover to the title, By the Shadows and the Sunlight is now one of my most favourite books by him.

It’s a mesmerising read. A collection of four outstanding stories that will give you chills. Each story has a captivating storyline with a remarkable plot.

Not giving any spoilers, as mentioned in the blurb, the stories are about,

A daughter returns to a Kolkata she no longer remembers and grapples with the recent passing of her father, A foreign traveller seeks to understand the mystery of a North Indian plot of land that carries with it dark secrets from The Raj.

A young girl accesses the heart and mind of an elder who allows her to understand the complexities of the afterlife, and in the most poignant story of all Dutt pays tribute to 17-year-old Neha Paswan who was beaten to death by relatives and hung from a bridge by members of her extended family in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

Sounds interesting? Each story is brilliantly written, giving readers goosebumps. Be it Sujata Dasgupta’s return to her home, her relationship with her mother and brother, the secret of her father’s death or Timothy’s journey to fulfill Radhana’s wish and his equation with Sanjay Sahota. Each story has a unique theme and is a journey to witness.

With Crisp, descriptive narration, rich engaging writing style and lots of drama and emotions, Saurav Dutt’s By the Shadow and the Sunlight takes us on the journey of love, loss, grief, tangled relationships and the lessons of life.

Each story has its own experience, that readers will witness. Love reading short stories? Love reading soulful stories? This is the book you must not skip.
A must-read book.

Summary

An enchanting collection of four short stories from one of India’s most original writers.

Lyrical, personal, mythical, hilarious and mesmeric stories that shed new light on both India and the writer through whose eyes we access this compelling and resonant land.

A daughter returns to a Kolkata she no longer remembers and grapples with the recent passing of her father, a foreign traveler seeks to understand the mystery of a North Indian plot of land that carries with it dark secrets from The Raj, a young girl accesses the heart and mind of an elder who allows her to understand the complexities of the afterlife, and in the most poignant story of all Dutt pays tribute to 17-year-old Neha Paswan who was beaten to death by relatives and hung from a bridge by members of her extended family in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh.

From the TIME and Esquire featured Author Saurav Dutt, who VICE described as “the bastard step-child of Salman Rushdie” comes another rich and elegantly told creation that lingers long in the memory and speaks to universal truths and mysteries impacting a thriving democracy that continues to grapple with its own challenges.
