Review:

As an African proverb states, “Until the lion learns how to write, every story will glorify the hunter.”  Neha Bansal’s Her Story gives voice to that lion—a fierce, unfiltered, and profoundly moving collection that amplifies the silenced struggles, resilience, and triumphs of women across time.

Some poems calm us, while others make us confront the pain, scars, and challenges that individuals experience. In ‘Her Story, ’ Neha Bansal guides us through the world of women who have fought, survived, and lived through their struggles.  Through her verses, Bansal paints a vivid picture of the varied and intricate realities women face, highlighting the known and unknown battles they confront every single day. In one context, a woman may be worshipped, while in another, she may face abuse.  Bansal delves into the narratives of iconic figures such as Draupadi, the fiercely proud queen from the Mahabharata; Mandodari, the wise and resilient wife of Ravana; Shurpanakha, who defied societal norms; Ahalya, who faced betrayal; and Urmila, who endured heartache, shedding light on their journeys while addressing issues such as equality, ageing, toxic family dynamics, hope, and the complexities of life.

Each poem reveals different shades of life, creating an emotional journey that Bansal skillfully weaves with her words. Her powerful and captivating writing style allows readers to truly feel the experiences of the characters. The poetry is relatable, thought-provoking, and straightforward. While many of the pieces reflect the darker aspects of life, we also encounter lighter moments in poems like “Hiraeth” and “Crochet Lace Hankies,” which evoke nostalgia and warm memories. This collection takes you on a moving journey that compels you to pause and reflect. Additionally, the beautiful illustrations included in the book add charm to the poetry.

My favourite poems are “The Unwed Mother,” “Devi,” and “Raksha Bandhan.” If you are drawn to poetry that does not merely exist on the page but reaches into the depths of human experience, Her Story is a collection that demands to be read, felt, and remembered. It is more than poetry—it is a testament to the unbreakable spirit of women and the stories that deserve to be told. For those who seek poetry that lingers in the mind and soul, this collection is an unmissable read.
