Review

“The thought that we are somehow indispensable makes us rush through life, not realising that we don’t even enjoy the moments that make the running worthwhile.”

From the story A Wednesday from #Gheerice & #Dhalfry

I was intrigued by the title, what does Gheerice and dhal fry mean? What is the story about?  Like the unique title, the author pens down thought-provoking short stories that are common yet uncommon. The stories are about PERSPECTIVE.

What will happen if you let kids run the world? Will you go to work in another country just for your favourite food? Can a rope save someone’s life? Can the availability of a feeble signal change a person? What will happen if you continue to live with the rules of the past? Can you get hurt by what you don’t know? How best do you get out of a personal tragedy?  Well, this book answers it all.

Krishna Ramachandran takes snippets from daily life and shares how a single thought can change one’s perspective and how thinking a little differently can save us in many ways. That’s what these stories are about, Thinking differently.

Gheerice and dhal fry by Krishna Ramachandran is a collection of 18 short stories that take us to the lives of characters and the situations they face. The stories are short, crisp and intriguing with unexpected twists making readers inquisitive about the decisions the characters will make.

From rethinking our priorities in life to celebrating our loved ones every day, from hiding secrets to not ignoring and not reading important mail, these stories are just like the title of the book, sweet, spicy, sour and satisfying. A perfect combination. One of the most remarkable things about this book is the author’s ability to capture the nuances of human emotions and experiences in just a few pages.

What I liked most is the way the author weaves every tale with an unexpected twist, offering readers food for thought. The stories are reflections of how we think, how we judge someone so easily and make a perspective without knowing the actual truth.

With varied themes of love, hope, change, loss, and happiness, the plot of each story is impressive, diverse and to the point. Krishna’s writing style is captivating and relatable, making it easy for the readers to connect to the story. Each story is beautifully created and is emotionally charged.

The stories are fast-paced, short yet powerful, conveying an important and beautiful message that makes readers think about them for a longer time. What I loved most is the way he curates the world for each character in the story. One could relate to their situations and the way they deal with the situations.

I loved reading all the stories but the stories that stood out for me are, By the Side of the Road, Shanthi Sweets, Kids these days, Masala Dosa and Sambhar Idly and GheeRice and Dhal Fry. These stories made me think about how we neglect what we have, how we judge someone so quickly and how we can’t accept change so easily. With these stories, Krishna highlights the common mistakes we make unknowingly without realizing their impact.  Each character is flawed and imperfect, yet they all have a unique perspective that adds depth and complexity to the story.

If you enjoy reading light and intriguing stories, this book is the one for you. Indeed a mesmerizing read.
