Review

I always love reading mysteries and detective stories and young detective by Sumita Bose is a refreshing read. A light, quick and fun read that makes young readers curious. Yes, it’s a book for young readers for the age group of 9 to 14 years.

12 intriguing stories, with word scramble, mystery quotes, mystery numbers, facts and words, this book is perfect for introducing young readers to the detective world I would say. I loved solving the mystery words and knowing and finding the secret messages.

It’s a collection of simple stories with a loose end, asking readers a question at the end on how the detective found it, with the answers revealed at the end of the book. The stories are good, interesting and to the point. I would have loved it more if the answers were there at the end of the story itself rather than an abrupt ending.

Crisply narrated with an engrossing writing style I liked the way Sumita added the element of curiosity in each story. The answers were in the stories themselves, we just need to analyze them well.

Loved the way she curated the book. The stories are well-curated and the way events were taking place will excite the readers. The secret message part scrambled words everything added cherry to the cake. It made the whole reading experience more interesting.

My favourite stories from the book are The Laptop, The Kidnapped Businessman (the answer for this one astounds me), The Sculptor( I found the answer), and The Quiz. The stories are fast-paced with characters narrating the case to the detective. I would have loved it more if there were more characters and more thrill to the story. I felt the stories ended too quickly. Keeping the target audience in mind, it’s It’s a good, interesting read. Introduce them to the detective terms with this one.

Sumita makes the reading experience more interesting with the elements of suspense, curiosity and unexpected answers that will surely surprise the readers.

It’s a quick, breezy read that you will enjoy.

Summary

‘Young Detective’ is a collection of a dozen mystery stories. At the end of each story there is a question for the readers. The answer to this question solves the mystery. Every child is a detective since they always ask the 5 W’s (when, what, who, why, where). The 5 W’s are the basic questions of a detective. These questions develop the curiosity of a child which in turn helps them to acquire knowledge. It is the job of the parents and teachers to arouse this curiosity for learning to take place. The author Sumita Bose has written the stories and many more in this book for intellectual stimulation. The main aim of the book is to develop logical, analytical and reasoning skills among children.
