Hope carries all of our burdens and tells us to sit, and wait under its cool shade and take some rest. Hope tells us to trust him when nobody trusts us, not even our personal shadows.

from the book n 30 Years in the searing sun: A Romance Memoir: by Kalavathi Raj

I love reading memoirs, it makes me feel more connected to the author. Book 87 of 2023 is an interesting memoir where Kalavathi Raj shares one of the most important phases of life. She talks about finding love. Here she shares her journey of a loveless childhood and her quest of finding true love.

In 30 Years in the searing sun: A Romance Memoir by Kalavathi Raj shares her journey of living with her parents who always underestimated their daughter. From facing racial discrimination as a teen to enduring a public school system that failed to validate her, to how she was always taunted for not following the crowd. One could relate to her situation, her journey and the way she always puts trust in the universe and how the universe always helped her.

This heartfelt memoir offers readers an intimate and honest account of her life filled with challenges, disappointments, and ultimately, triumphs. From the very first page, Kalavathi’s captivating storytelling draws readers into her world, where she reveals the stark reality of her loveless childhood, experiencing every heartbreak, setback, and moment of joy.

What sets this memoir apart is Kalavathi’s ability to weave a narrative that effortlessly connects with readers on an emotional level. Her writing style is both elegant and engaging. With each chapter, you feel more and more connected to her journey as she invites us to walk alongside her on her journey. Each chapter unveils a new layer of her life, from the traumas of her childhood to her encounters with different individuals and her pursuit of love.

We find poems related to the situations at the end of each chapter which makes it more interesting. We can feel her pain in her words and those beautiful poems. She shares about the relationship she shared with her parents, sister and her grandmother. I loved the part where her grandmother took her last breath and their conversation during that time.

How protective she was for her sister, no matter how hard her parents were on her, in the end, she forgave them. Her equation with her father, and her mother’s efforts to find a perfect match for her, everything felt real. From the traumas of her childhood to her professional endeavours, from the men who crossed her path but failed to ignite lasting love, to her relentless resilience in the face of life’s betrayals, Kalavathi’s narrative encompasses it all. I liked how she added the tiniest detail about the situation.

Through her words, we witness her unwavering determination. How life and love always betrayed her, and how she got up every time she fell, never giving up on love and life, no matter the setbacks she encountered. Another thing I loved about  “30 Years in the Searing Sun” is the honesty in Kalavathi’s writing. Her storytelling power shines as she recounts the various obstacles she encountered throughout her life’s journey.

She fearlessly addresses issues such as racial discrimination, societal pressures, and personal insecurities, presenting a raw and honest account of her struggles. With each setback, she evolved as a person and that’s what I enjoyed reading most. We will find ourselves captivated by her unwavering determination and the way she turns hardships into fuel for personal growth.
